On September 22, 2023, the Innovatiecluster Drachten (ICD) welcomed 25 students from Hochschule Emden-Leer for a unique 'Safari' excursion in the modern SKILL building on the Philips site, the 'Shared Knowledge Innovation Learning Lab'.

These students, specialized in Industrial Automation and Data Science, got an inside look at some of the region's leading tech companies and delved into topics such as factory robotics and sustainable energy.

Launch of 'Internationally Connected'

A highlight of the excursion was the launch of the new program 'Internationally Connected', supported by Interreg. This program was officially launched by Prof. Dr. Gerhard Kreutz, president of HSEL, together with Binne Visser, chairman of ICD and Michiel Kasteleijn, director of IWCN, and promises to further strengthen cooperation between technical educational institutions and companies in the region.

Company visits and lectures

During the excursion, the students visited various prominent companies such as BD Kiestra, FMI ImProvia, Philips, Resato International, Spark Holland, Ventura and XPAR Vision. These companies are active in various technical fields, from automated laboratory systems to high-tech sensor and robot technology. The students had the opportunity to learn from and network with industry experts, providing them with valuable insights and connections for their future careers.

The themes of the lectures and tours were mainly focused on factory robotics and sustainable energy, two very relevant and forward-looking topics in today's world. The students were also informed about the possibilities regarding working and studying in the Northern Netherlands, which contributes to the attractiveness of the region as a hub for technical innovation and education.

This is how Hendri Kortman from Variass made the students enthusiastic robotics. The company not only provided a hospitable lunch, but also gave the students an in-depth insight into the practical applications of cobots in industry.

Jan Barkmeijer from Ventura took the group on a journey about the role of autonomous driving vehicles in public transport. He shared his pride in Ventura's involvement in this important and innovative field.
